Texas

 Texas, the 28th state, is known as the "Lone Star State". Cowboys first appeared in Texas in 1822 as a result of colonization encouraged by Mexico. The cattle and horses introduced by the Spanish explorers multiplied quickly and by 1836 were available in great numbers to anyone who could cath them :) With many thanks to Aurora!
